What is JIF?

The Jamaica Investment Forum (JIF) 2015 is Jamaica’s international investment and business conference, designed for eager investors and business executives who want to discover business opportunities and industry developments, learn about alternative emerging opportunities and discuss Jamaica’s business climate. The focus will be in the key sectors of Tourism, Logistics, Manufacturing, Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO), Agribusiness and International Financial Services.

    The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller is Jamaica’s Prime Minister and Leader of the Government. Prime Minister Simpson Miller’s ascension to Jamaica’s highest political office, came after having served for 17 years as a Cabinet Minister with portfolio responsibility for Labour, Social Security and Sport; Tourism, Entertainment and Sport; Women’s Affairs; and Local Government, Community Development and Sport. As Prime Minister, she currently has Ministerial oversight of Information, Development, Sport, Women’s Affairs and Defense. She was appointed by the UN Secretary General, to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and she chairs the CARICOM Committee on External Trade.

    Dr. the Hon. Peter Phillips, MP

    Dr. the Hon. Peter Phillips is the Minister of Finance and Planning for Jamaica. Before entering Parliament, Dr. Phillips had a distinguished career in academia. He is a former Lecturer in the Department of Government and the Consortium Graduate School at the University of the West Indies and has published extensively on a variety of Caribbean development issues. Dr. Peter Phillips earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Master of Science in Government from the University of the West Indies. A Fulbright Scholar, he completed doctoral studies in International Political Economy at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he is a Ford Foundation Fellow.

    Hon. G. Anthony Hylton, MP

    Anthony Hylton is the Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce for Jamaica and the main architect of Jamaica’s Logistics Hub Initiative. A lawyer by profession, he was the managing partner in Jamaica’s first specialist aviation, maritime, international trade, energy, and general commercial law practice. As Chair of the National Competitiveness Council, he is focused on the enhancement of the Jamaican business environment. Min. Hylton holds a Master of laws (LL.M), with a focus on aviation, maritime, space and insurance from the University of London; a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University and is a graduate of Morgan State University.

    Anabel Gonzalez

    Anabel Gonzalez is the Senior Director of The World Bank Group Global Practice on Trade and Competitiveness. Previously, she served as Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Trade and the President's principal advisor, negotiator and spokesperson on trade and investment policy. During her tenure, she led Costa Rica’s efforts to join the OECD, and negotiated, approved and implemented six free trade agreements - including with China and the European Union. She also implemented policies that significantly enhanced the investment climate in Costa Rica and contributed to the attraction of over 140 investment projects. Ms. Gonzalez also had a lead role in Costa Rica’s Competitiveness and Innovation Council. For the past two years, she has served as Chair of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Trade and Foreign Direct Investment and currently leads the Global Agenda Council on Competitiveness. Ms. Gonzalez holds an LLM from Georgetown University and a law degree from the University of Costa Rica.

    Hon. Dr. K. Wykeham McNeill, MP

    The Hon. Dr. K. Wykeham McNeill is Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism and Entertainment. Having been trained in medicine in Cuba, he served in various hospitals in Jamaica including across Jamaica including the St. Ann’s Bay, Spanish Town, University and the Kingston Public Hospitals. He later went on to private practice at the Eureka Medical Centre. A strong advocate for the tourism industry, he has been involved in the tourism portfolio for several years, having been appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism and Sports from 2000 to 2007. In that capacity, he was responsible for tourism operations, including cruise shipping and tourism development.

    Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson, MP

    The Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson is the Minister of Health in Jamaica. A dental surgeon by profession, he is passionate about the provision of quality health services to Jamaicans and has implemented programmes and projects geared at improving health, especially at the primary level of care. He has a passion for the reduction of non-communicable diseases and is working to ensure that Regional Governments endorse a commitment to reduction by 2025. Dr. Ferguson chairs the Caribbean Regional Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the Executive Boards of the Pan Caribbean Partnership on HIV/AIDS (PANCAP). He is also the chair of the CARICOM Council of Human and Social Development (COHSOD).

    Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, MP

    The Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites is Jamaica’s Minister of Education. An Attorney, journalist, farmer and Minister of Religion, he was elected Member of Parliament for Central Kingston in 1997 and was appointed Minister of Education in January 2012. He has played an active role in Jamaica’s education system having served on staff at his Alma mater, St. George’s College and at St. Andrew High School. He was also a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Law and a part-time lecturer in the Department of Social Work at the University of the West Indies. Minister Thwaites was awarded the Jamaica Scholarship to Cornell University and later the Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University.

    Phillip Paulwell is the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy. Consistent with Jamaica’s national development plan: “Vision 2030”, his vision emphasizes the achievement of this status through technological advancement, the exploration and sustainable exploitation of the country’s natural resources, increased reliance on the utilization of new and renewable sources of energy and the nurturing of a culture of innovation, enterprise and integrity. Min. Paulwell’s mission to promote and implement ground-breaking projects such as the Tablets in Schools and Startup Jamaica projects reflect this vision. Min. Paulwell also championed the historic liberalization of the telecommunications sector in 1999. This opened the industry to the benefits of competition and resulted in significant investments in mobile telephony and related ICT services, the roll-out of broadband infrastructure and cost-effective access by Jamaicans to mobile telephone service. Min. Paulwell has also been a leading proponent of measures designed to maximize increased use of new and renewable energy as well as the diversification of the use of fossil based fuels in order to enhance the competitiveness of Jamaica’s production and enable Jamaicans access to low-cost electricity.

    Hon. Derrick Kellier, CD, MP

    Derrick Kellier is the Minister of Agriculture, Labour and Social Security. He has served in various capacities as the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government, Youth and Sports and Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minster (OPM). He has been involved in various projects including the National Youth Service (NYS) Programme, the Sugar Lands Divestment Programme, Labour Day Projects, the Venezuelan Investment Fund Projects, and activities surrounding the Urban Development Corporation and Operation PRIDE. Min. Kellier is also a businessman and a farmer. He is a member of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) and previously held leadership positions as President of the St. James Senior Members’ Council Youth Club Association, Chairman of the Youth Action Movement, and President of the National Union of Young Farmers.

    Jon Habeski is the Senior Vice President of Product Design and Service at Vistaprint. In this capacity, Mr. Habeski is responsible for defining the service strategy for the business as well as service operations across 8 locations and approximately 1400 people serving North America, Western Europe and Australia/New Zealand. He is also responsible for Product Design, which includes Vistaprint’s product content strategy and operations as well as the various means for designing products on the site. Over the last 15 years, Vistaprint has evolved from being a free business card company to one that empowers small business owners to promote their business leveraging multiple products and services. Over the years, Vistaprint has increased its customer focus and also begun targeting higher value customers, necessitating the need for a robust service strategy as well as an increasing investment in service and services to its customers. Prior to joining Vistaprint, Mr. Habeski was a consultant with Andersen Consulting as well as a few smaller firms in the Boston area focusing on custom application development. He is a graduate of RPI with a BA in Mechanical Engineering.

Ltd. was acquired by Gruppo Campari, he was appointed Chairman and Managing Director, and in 2013 became Chairman of the consolidated organisation J. Wray & Nephew Ltd, while keeping his current roles in Gruppo Campari as General Counsel and Business Development Officer. He continues to play a pivotal role in the strategic development of J. Wray & Nephew Ltd.

    Jacques Nyssen is the Head of Export Finance BeNeLux-France at Commerzbank AG. Prior to leading this team which manages contract negotiations with foreign trade partners, he was a Senior Vice President at Commerzbank Belgium. Fluent in French, English, Dutch and German, he is a Board Member and member of the Executive Committee of the Chamber of Commerce Belgium-Luxemburg -- Africa-Caribbean-Pacific (CBL – ACP) and is President of the Belgian Caribbean Business Club. Possessing a Master of Laws, Mr. Nyssen is an Advisor of Foreign Trade to the Belgian Government and has been active in financing Belgian projects in Jamaica since 1995. He was also awarded by the Governor General the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander.

    Hon. Sharon Ffolkes Abrahams, MP

    Min. Ffolkes Abrahams is the Minister of State in Jamaica’s Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce. An Attorney-at-Law, lecturer in law, and newspaper columnist, she is a trained human rights specialist with a passion for social justice. She is also the immediate Past President of the Jamaican Diaspora Foundation of Canada, where she represented Jamaica’s interests. Min. Ffolkes Abrahams, holds a first degree in Law and has been called to the Jamaican Bar. In Canada, she qualified for the Bar at Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar. She received her Master’s degree in Administrative Law from York University.

    Hon. Julian J. Robinson, MP

    Julian Robinson is the Minister of State in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining. He also serves as the Deputy General Secretary of the People’s National Party. His vision of Jamaica is a developed, knowledge-based, industrialized society driven by appropriate developmental policies, sustained by significant investments in the information and communications technology sector and fuelled by innovation, enterprise and a highly competent labour force. Before entering representational politics, Min. Robinson began his career as a Management and e-Business Consultant in London, where he worked for international firms IBM, a multinational technology and consulting corporation and Scient Corporation, one of the first e-Business systems innovators with headquarters in the United States. He also worked at Jamaica’s trade and investment promotion agency, JAMPRO, where he was instrumental in positioning Jamaica as a major player in the ICT outsourcing industry by attracting several international companies to the island to establish offshore operations. Min. Robinson holds a BSc in Management and Economics from the University of the West Indies, Mona and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the USA.

    Milton Samuda is the Chairman of Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) – the national investment and export promotion agency. He is the Managing Partner of Samuda & Johnson and heads the Law Firm’s Commercial Department where his practice includes Tourism, Corporate and Hotel Financing; Trade and Transportation; Mining and Energy; Sports and Entertainment; and Maritime Law. Mr. Samuda is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Spanish Jamaican Foundation (a foundation established by Spanish Investors in Jamaica) and also serves as the Foundation’s Secretary. He received a L.L.B. (Hons.) degree from the University of the West Indies and has been admitted to practice in Jamaica and in the British Virgin Islands.

    Professor the Hon. Gordon Shirley is the President and CEO of the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) – the agency responsible for the regulation and development of Jamaica’s port and shipping industry. Prior to working at PAJ, he was the Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. In 2001, he served as Jamaica’s Ambassador to the USA and Permanent Representative to the OAS and has served on several public and private sector boards and committees in Jamaica, USA and Canada. Professor Shirley holds a BSc in Engineering, an MBA in Operations and Finance from Harvard University and a Doctorate in Business Administration (Operations Management).

    Dr. Alejandro Werner

    Alejandro Werner is the Director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He has served as Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico, Professor of Economics at the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid Spain and Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at BBVA-Bancomer. Mr. Werner was named Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2007 and received a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    Jeffrey Hall is the Chief Executive Officer of Jamaica Producers Group Ltd. (JPG) which is listed on the Jamaica Stock Exchange and has its primary interests in manufacturing, logistics and agri-business in the Caribbean and Europe. Mr. Hall joined the company in 2001 and has served as CEO since July 2007. Prior to joining JP, he practiced banking and securities law in New York as a member of the New York Bar. Mr. Hall holds a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School and a Master of Public Policy degree (Public and International Finance) from Harvard University where he was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship.

    Therese Turner Jones is the Country Representative in Jamaica for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). A national of The Bahamas, she graduated from the University of Toronto and holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of East Anglia (UK). Mrs. Turner Jones has over 20 years of experience in the areas of macroeconomics and economic development, with particular emphasis in the Caribbean. Mrs. Turner-Jones served in key positions in the International Monetary Fund including, Deputy Division Chief for the Caribbean II Division, Western Hemisphere Department, and Advisor to the Executive Director for Canada, Ireland, and the Caribbean. Previous to her work at the IMF, she worked at the Central Bank of The Bahamas.

    Dr. Eric Deans

    Dr. Eric Deans is the Chairman of the Jamaica Logistics Hub Task Force and the Jamaica Free Zone Council. A maritime policy expert with broad operational experience supported by strong academic foundations, Dr. Deans has senior management experience at the largest transshipment port in the Caribbean - the Port of Kingston and most recently served as Director of Shipping and Policy Research at the Maritime Authority of Jamaica. He has a solid history of environmental stewardship, including serving as a member of the IMO Export Group on market based measures to reduce ship emissions, has served as the Jamaican representative to the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the IMO and is the former National Coordinator for the Wider Caribbean Initiative on ship generated wastes. He is a member of the Kingston Free Zone Board, the Montego Bay Free Zone Board, the Kingston Container Terminal Privatization Enterprise Team, the Advisory Board for the Jamaica Customs Agency and the National Commission on Science & Technology. Dr. Deans holds a Ph.D. in Marine Policy from the University of Delaware, an MSc. in Maritime Studies from the University of Wales and a BSc. in Chemistry from the University of the West Indies.

    Mr. Shinji Yamamoto is the Chief Investment Officer for Global Infrastructure – Power at the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Having joined IFC via the World Bank Young Professional Program in 1992, with prior work experience at Sony Corporation and McKinsey & Co, he has led a number of project and corporate financing transactions in various sectors, including textiles, tourism, and construction materials, in Asia, Central Asia, and North Africa. Mr. Yamamoto has also been engaged in advisory services for infrastructure and other projects in Philippines (water) and Indonesia. In his current role, his primary focus is on financing power projects (project and corporate finance as well as equity) of various types including thermal (coal, diesel, and gas), hydro (run-of-river and reservoir), and renewable (wind, solar and geothermal) electricity generation as well as distribution utilities around the world. Mr. Yamamoto is directly responsible for leading 27 transactions with US$1.5 billion in total IFC direct exposure and US$8.4 billion in total project costs. He holds a B.Sc in Engineering and Economics from the University of Oxford and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

    Lindsay Culbreath is the Senior Director of Business Development for STR, Inc. - the recognized leader for hotel industry benchmarking and research. STR provides clients—including hotel operators, developers, analysts and suppliers to the hotel industry—access to hotel research and custom reports. STR provides a single source of global hotel data covering daily and monthly performance data, forecasts, annual profitability, hotel pipeline and hotel census information. STR founded the STR family of companies and is proudly associated with STR Global, STR Analytics, and Hotel News Now. STR also founded the Hotel Data Conference which is held annually in Nashville, Tennessee. Ms. Culbreath oversees the business development and marketing efforts for the STR family of companies. She is responsible for the growth of the STAR program as well as building vendor relationships by promoting new products and services. Lindsay is a graduate of Lipscomb University with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Management.

    Milverton Reynolds is the Managing Director of the Development Bank of Jamaica Limited (DBJ). He has a wealth of experience in banking and insurance as a management executive in both the private and public sectors having worked at the Jamaica Citizens and the Workers Savings Workers Savings and Loan banks, international audit firm Peat Marwick & Partners, Life of Jamaica (Insurance Company) as the President and CEO, National Housing Trust, and the Jamaica Mortgage Bank, among others. Born and raised in the breadbasket parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, where he saw first-hand the needs and problems of many farming communities, and coupled with his extensive training in banking and financial management, he is acutely aware of the importance of development banking and, in particular, the role it can play in the growth of small and medium-sized businesses. He holds a B.Sc. in Management Studies from the University of the West Indies, and an MBA from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and the University of London.

    Brian Wynter is the Governor of the Bank of Jamaica. As Governor, he is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank. Mr. Wynter holds a BSc (Economics) honours degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a Graduate Diploma in Law from The City University, London. He has been called to the Bar of England and Wales is enrolled as an attorney in the Supreme Court of Judicature in Jamaica. Mr. Wynter also holds a Masters in International Economics from Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, New York. Before returning to Jamaica in 1988, he worked with Chase Investment Bank and Schroder Wertheim International Company. In Jamaica, he has worked with the National Investment Bank of Jamaica, Mutual Security Merchant Bank and Citibank, NA, where he served as Vice President. Mr. Wynter has also served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Jamaica, Technical Advisor to the Minister of Finance, Executive Director of the Financial Services Commission and Capital Markets/Financial Sector Advisor for Caribbean Regional Technical Assistance Centre (CARTAC) in Barbados.

    Mr. Richard Pandohie is the Chief Executive Officer and a Director of the Seprod Group. He was appointed to the Board in December 2012. He has held several Senior Executive positions in related entities within the Caribbean and Central America, most recently as Managing Director, Carreras Ltd in Jamaica. Mr. Pandohie is a former President of the Rotary Club of New Kingston and a Director of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce. He holds an MBA in Corporate Finance and Operations from the McGill University and a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of the West Indies.

    Mrs. Maureen Hayden-Cater has been President of First Global Bank Limited since 2010. She leads the Bank’s strategy to become Jamaica’s most convenient bank, supported by cutting-edge technology and excellent customer service.

    A career banker, Mrs. Hayden Cater worked for many years at Citibank where she held several senior positions including Global Transaction Services & Commercial Bank Head, Risk Management Head, and Head of International Trade Finance. She also served as Corporate Bank Head and Country Risk Manager in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

    Mrs. Hayden-Cater is the President of the Jamaica Bankers Association where she has articulated a mission to encourage transparency within the banking sector, and encourage public trust in the sector, by implementing programmes that increase the financial literacy of the Jamaican people.

His professional career with PricewaterhouseCoopers includes a tour of duty with the Toronto office, and a one-year secondment as Chief Financial Officer to Jamaica National Investment Company Limited (now Development Bank of Jamaica). Before joining PricewaterhouseCoopers, he served as Chief Internal Auditor for the National Housing Trust. He was a member of the 2005 Government Committee on Tax Policy Reform and the Prime Minister’s Task Force on the Reform of the Education System. He is the President of several property development and holding companies having developed account office buildings, luxury residential condominiums, houses, warehousing, shopping centres and sports clubs. Rider Levett Bucknall is currently the Project Monitor for the US$ 3.4b Baha Mar Resort in Nassau, and Project Managers on the Viceroy Casi Cielo resort in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Mr. Bould was appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth in 2012.

    Mr. Byles is the President and CEO of Sagicor Group Jamaica Limited. He is also Co-Chairman of Jamaica’s Economic Programme Oversight Committee (EPOC) which is charged with oversight of the implementation of the IMF Agreement with the Government of Jamaica. The Sagicor Group is the leading provider of life and health insurance, pension and annuities products in Jamaica and the owner of the third largest Commercial Bank. Through funds the Group manages, it is also the largest owner of commercial property and one of Jamaica’s major hotel owners. Under Mr. Byles’ leadership, the Group has evolved through a series of acquisitions, including Pan Caribbean Investments Limited and First Life Insurance Company Limited, the Blue Cross Jamaica health insurance portfolio, and the banking operations of RBC Jamaica. Prior to Sagicor Life Jamaica, Mr. Byles was the President and CEO of Pan Jamaican Investment Trust Limited (Pan Jam) where he directed the group through a number of mergers, acquisitions and divestments. He holds a BSc. in Economics from the University of the West Indies and an MSc. in National Development from the University of Bradford, England.

Ms. Francis recently concluded seven years as Executive Director of the International Trade Centre, the joint agency of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations (UN) with a mission to support private sector export success. Before joining ITC, she was President of JAMPRO for ten years. During her tenure, Jamaica attracted more than US$ 5 billion in foreign direct investment. She also served twice as President of the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies, the China-Caribbean Business Council and was a member of the Commonwealths Eminent Persons group reviewing the role of the Commonwealth.

As Vice President, Mr. Schulz is responsible for coordinating the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC), Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), Structured and Corporate Finance Department (SCF) and Opportunities for the Majority Sector (OMJ). Mr. Schulz continues his role as General Manager of SCF, where he oversees the Bank’s private sector operations in infrastructure, financial markets, industries and services, and health and education. SCF invests in large companies, financial institutions and mixed-capital entities on a project and corporate finance basis. Under Mr. Schulz’ leadership, SCF has doubled its assets, furthered its focus on climate change investments, addressed SMEs’ financing needs and promotes other socially inclusive finance. Mr. Schulz advocates for enhancing the competitiveness of companies while mainstreaming social and environmental sustainability into private sector operations. Previously, he managed the IDB’s financial markets group, leading the creation of the Trade Finance Facilitation Program, and served as the Senior Advisor to the IDB’s Executive Vice President. A German citizen, Mr. Schulz holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from Southern Illinois University and undergraduate degrees in economics and business from Marburg University in Germany.

    Michael McMorris is a Principal of Development Consulting firm, KRONOS. A former corporate and investment banker at the CEO level, Mr. McMorris specialized in debt and Capital Markets fundraising during his 15 year banking career. He was also an Executive Director of JAMPRO – Jamaica’s investment promotion agency for 5 years during which, national FDI was driven to an average, in excess of US$600 million per annum. For the last decade, Mr. McMorris and KRONOS have championed new venture development in the finance, BPO, healthcare, luxury-retail and hospitality industries by delivering investment feasibility analysis, sale and acquisition support, fundraising, corporate management and Government advocacy services. Currently, in the hospitality segment, Mr. McMorris works with owner-developers on funding and execution of new projects and the repositioning of existing assets. In the last 5 years, he has been involved with the establishment of three new hotel chains in Jamaica and served as Managing Director of the development company for the 700 room Secrets Resorts in Montego Bay. He currently serves as the Head of the Subcommittee on Education and Training on the National Logistics Task Force, Chairman of the Associates Committee for the Port Management Association of the Caribbean, and Honorary Advisor of Shanghai Cruise Ship & Yacht Association. Dr. Pinnock holds a B.Sc. in Economics and Accounting from the University of the West Indies, an M.Sc. in International Shipping and Logistics from the University of Plymouth (UK) and a PhD. in Sustainable Development from UWI. Prior to Sutherland, Ms. Rockhead spent close to 15 years at Xerox, 10 of which were in the capacity of Vice President managing a portfolio of US$50M in annualized revenue and overseeing operations in Jamaica, Africa, USA, Dominica Republic and Mexico. Her career saw her becoming a Vice President in a Fortune 500 company (ACS) at age 25. Ms. Rockhead is also a Justice of the Peace (JP).
