What is JIF?

The Jamaica Investment Forum (JIF) 2015 is Jamaica’s international investment and business conference, designed for eager investors and business executives who want to discover business opportunities and industry developments, learn about alternative emerging opportunities and discuss Jamaica’s business climate. The focus will be in the key sectors of Tourism, Logistics, Manufacturing, Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO), Agribusiness and International Financial Services.

    The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller is Jamaica’s Prime Minister and Leader of the Government. Prime Minister Simpson Miller’s ascension to Jamaica’s highest political office, came after having served for 17 years as a Cabinet Minister with portfolio responsibility for Labour, Social Security and Sport; Tourism, Entertainment and Sport; Women’s Affairs; and Local Government, Community Development and Sport. As Prime Minister, she currently has Ministerial oversight of Information, Development, Sport, Women’s Affairs and Defense. She was appointed by the UN Secretary General, to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and she chairs the CARICOM Committee on External Trade.

    Dr. the Hon. Peter Phillips, MP

    Dr. the Hon. Peter Phillips is the Minister of Finance and Planning for Jamaica. Before entering Parliament, Dr. Phillips had a distinguished career in academia. He is a former Lecturer in the Department of Government and the Consortium Graduate School at the University of the West Indies and has published extensively on a variety of Caribbean development issues. Dr. Peter Phillips earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Master of Science in Government from the University of the West Indies. A Fulbright Scholar, he completed doctoral studies in International Political Economy at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he is a Ford Foundation Fellow.

    Hon. G. Anthony Hylton, MP

    Anthony Hylton is the Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce for Jamaica and the main architect of Jamaica’s Logistics Hub Initiative. A lawyer by profession, he was the managing partner in Jamaica’s first specialist aviation, maritime, international trade, energy, and general commercial law practice. As Chair of the National Competitiveness Council, he is focused on the enhancement of the Jamaican business environment. Min. Hylton holds a Master of laws (LL.M), with a focus on aviation, maritime, space and insurance from the University of London; a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University and is a graduate of Morgan State University.

    Anabel Gonzalez

    Anabel Gonzalez is the Senior Director of The World Bank Group Global Practice on Trade and Competitiveness. Previously, she served as Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Trade and the President's principal advisor, negotiator and spokesperson on trade and investment policy. During her tenure, she led Costa Rica’s efforts to join the OECD, and negotiated, approved and implemented six free trade agreements - including with China and the European Union. She also implemented policies that significantly enhanced the investment climate in Costa Rica and contributed to the attraction of over 140 investment projects. Ms. Gonzalez also had a lead role in Costa Rica’s Competitiveness and Innovation Council. For the past two years, she has served as Chair of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Trade and Foreign Direct Investment and currently leads the Global Agenda Council on Competitiveness. Ms. Gonzalez holds an LLM from Georgetown University and a law degree from the University of Costa Rica.

    Hon. Dr. K. Wykeham McNeill, MP

    The Hon. Dr. K. Wykeham McNeill is Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism and Entertainment. Having been trained in medicine in Cuba, he served in various hospitals in Jamaica including across Jamaica including the St. Ann’s Bay, Spanish Town, University and the Kingston Public Hospitals. He later went on to private practice at the Eureka Medical Centre. A strong advocate for the tourism industry, he has been involved in the tourism portfolio for several years, having been appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism and Sports from 2000 to 2007. In that capacity, he was responsible for tourism operations, including cruise shipping and tourism development.

    Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson, MP

    The Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson is the Minister of Health in Jamaica. A dental surgeon by profession, he is passionate about the provision of quality health services to Jamaicans and has implemented programmes and projects geared at improving health, especially at the primary level of care. He has a passion for the reduction of non-communicable diseases and is working to ensure that Regional Governments endorse a commitment to reduction by 2025. Dr. Ferguson chairs the Caribbean Regional Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the Executive Boards of the Pan Caribbean Partnership on HIV/AIDS (PANCAP). He is also the chair of the CARICOM Council of Human and Social Development (COHSOD).

    Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, MP

    The Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites is Jamaica’s Minister of Education. An Attorney, journalist, farmer and Minister of Religion, he was elected Member of Parliament for Central Kingston in 1997 and was appointed Minister of Education in January 2012. He has played an active role in Jamaica’s education system having served on staff at his Alma mater, St. George’s College and at St. Andrew High School. He was also a Research Fellow in the Faculty of Law and a part-time lecturer in the Department of Social Work at the University of the West Indies. Minister Thwaites was awarded the Jamaica Scholarship to Cornell University and later the Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University.

    Jon Habeski is the Senior Vice President of Product Design and Service at Vistaprint. In this capacity, Mr. Habeski is responsible for defining the service strategy for the business as well as service operations across 8 locations and approximately 1400 people serving North America, Western Europe and Australia/New Zealand. He is also responsible for Product Design, which includes Vistaprint’s product content strategy and operations as well as the various means for designing products on the site. Over the last 15 years, Vistaprint has evolved from being a free business card company to one that empowers small business owners to promote their business leveraging multiple products and services. Over the years, Vistaprint has increased its customer focus and also begun targeting higher value customers, necessitating the need for a robust service strategy as well as an increasing investment in service and services to its customers. Prior to joining Vistaprint, Mr. Habeski was a consultant with Andersen Consulting as well as a few smaller firms in the Boston area focusing on custom application development. He is a graduate of RPI with a BA in Mechanical Engineering.

    Jacques Nyssen is the Head of Export Finance BeNeLux-France at Commerzbank AG. Prior to leading this team which manages contract negotiations with foreign trade partners, he was a Senior Vice President at Commerzbank Belgium. Fluent in French, English, Dutch and German, he is a Board Member and member of the Executive Committee of the Chamber of Commerce Belgium-Luxemburg -- Africa-Caribbean-Pacific (CBL – ACP) and is a former President of the Belgian Caribbean Business Club. Possessing a Master of Laws, Mr. Nyssen is an Advisor of Foreign Trade to the Belgian Government and has been active in financing Belgian projects in Jamaica since 1995.

    Hon. Sharon Ffolkes Abrahams, MP

    Min. Ffolkes Abrahams is the Minister of State in Jamaica’s Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce. An Attorney-at-Law, lecturer in law, and newspaper columnist, she is a trained human rights specialist with a passion for social justice. She is also the immediate Past President of the Jamaican Diaspora Foundation of Canada, where she represented Jamaica’s interests. Min. Ffolkes Abrahams, holds a first degree in Law and has been called to the Jamaican Bar. In Canada, she qualified for the Bar at Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar. She received her Master’s degree in Administrative Law from York University.

    Milton Samuda is the Chairman of Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) – the national investment and export promotion agency. He is the Managing Partner of Samuda & Johnson and heads the Law Firm’s Commercial Department where his practice includes Tourism, Corporate and Hotel Financing; Trade and Transportation; Mining and Energy; Sports and Entertainment; and Maritime Law. Mr. Samuda is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Spanish Jamaican Foundation (a foundation established by Spanish Investors in Jamaica) and also serves as the Foundation’s Secretary. He received a L.L.B. (Hons.) degree from the University of the West Indies and has been admitted to practice in Jamaica and in the British Virgin Islands.

    Professor the Hon. Gordon Shirley is the President and CEO of the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) – the agency responsible for the regulation and development of Jamaica’s port and shipping industry. Prior to working at PAJ, he was the Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. In 2001, he served as Jamaica’s Ambassador to the USA and Permanent Representative to the OAS and has served on several public and private sector boards and committees in Jamaica, USA and Canada. Professor Shirley holds a BSc in Engineering, an MBA in Operations and Finance from Harvard University and a Doctorate in Business Administration (Operations Management).

    Dr. Alejandro Werner

    Alejandro Werner is the Director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He has served as Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico, Professor of Economics at the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid Spain and Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at BBVA-Bancomer. Mr. Werner was named Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2007 and received a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    Jeffrey Hall is the Chief Executive Officer of Jamaica Producers Group Ltd. (JPG) which is listed on the Jamaica Stock Exchange and has its primary interests in manufacturing, logistics and agri-business in the Caribbean and Europe. Mr. Hall joined the company in 2001 and has served as CEO since July 2007. Prior to joining JP, he practiced banking and securities law in New York as a member of the New York Bar.     Therese Turner Jones is the Country Representative in Jamaica for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). A national of The Bahamas, she graduated from the University of Toronto and holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of East Anglia (UK). Mrs. Turner Jones has over 20 years of experience in the areas of macroeconomics and economic development, with particular emphasis in the Caribbean. Mrs. Turner-Jones served in key positions in the International Monetary Fund including, Deputy Division Chief for the Caribbean II Division, Western Hemisphere Department, and Advisor to the Executive Director for Canada, Ireland, and the Caribbean. Previous to her work at the IMF, she worked at the Central Bank of The Bahamas.

With over 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry, Mrs. Sharpe has also led the Group’s Private Banking Unit and the Group’s life insurance subsidiary, Scotia Insurance. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in Accounting, is a CFA Charter Holder and has successfully completed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examinations.

    Shinji Yamamoto

    Mr. Shinji Yamamoto is the Chief Investment Officer for Global Infrastructure – Power at the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Having joined IFC via the World Bank Young Professional Program in 1992, with prior work experience at Sony Corporation and McKinsey & Co, he has led a number of project and corporate financing transactions in various sectors, including textiles, tourism, and construction materials, in Asia, Central Asia, and North Africa. Mr. Yamamoto has also been engaged in advisory services for infrastructure and other projects in Philippines (water) and Indonesia. In his current role, his primary focus is on financing power projects (project and corporate finance as well as equity) of various types including thermal (coal, diesel, and gas), hydro (run-of-river and reservoir), and renewable (wind, solar and geothermal) electricity generation as well as distribution utilities around the world. Mr. Yamamoto is directly responsible for leading 27 transactions with US$1.5 billion in total IFC direct exposure and US$8.4 billion in total project costs. He holds a B.Sc in Engineering and Economics from the University of Oxford and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

    Milverton Reynolds is the Managing Director of the Development Bank of Jamaica Limited (DBJ). He has a wealth of experience in banking and insurance as a management executive in both the private and public sectors having worked at the Jamaica Citizens and the Workers Savings Workers Savings and Loan banks, international audit firm Peat Marwick & Partners, Life of Jamaica (Insurance Company) as the President and CEO, National Housing Trust, and the Jamaica Mortgage Bank, among others. Born and raised in the breadbasket parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, where he saw first-hand the needs and problems of many farming communities, and coupled with his extensive training in banking and financial management, he is acutely aware of the importance of development banking and, in particular, the role it can play in the growth of small and medium-sized businesses. He holds a B.Sc. in Management Studies from the University of the West Indies, and an MBA from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and the University of London.

    Brian Wynter is the Governor of the Bank of Jamaica. As Governor, he is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank. Mr. Wynter holds a BSc (Economics) honours degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a Graduate Diploma in Law from The City University, London. He has been called to the Bar of England and Wales is enrolled as an attorney in the Supreme Court of Judicature in Jamaica. Mr. Wynter also holds a Masters in International Economics from Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, New York. Before returning to Jamaica in 1988, he worked with Chase Investment Bank and Schroder Wertheim International Company. In Jamaica, he has worked with the National Investment Bank of Jamaica, Mutual Security Merchant Bank and Citibank, NA, where he served as Vice President. Mr. Wynter has also served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Jamaica, Technical Advisor to the Minister of Finance, Executive Director of the Financial Services Commission and Capital Markets/Financial Sector Advisor for Caribbean Regional Technical Assistance Centre (CARTAC) in Barbados.

    Mr. Richard Pandohie is the Chief Executive Officer and a Director of the Seprod Group. He was appointed to the Board in December 2012. Mr. Pandohie is a former President of the Rotary Club of New Kingston and a Director of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce.     Mrs. Maureen Hayden-Cater has been President of First Global Bank Limited since 2010. She leads the Bank’s strategy to become Jamaica’s most convenient bank, supported by cutting-edge technology and excellent customer service.

    A career banker, Mrs. Hayden Cater worked for many years at Citibank where she held several senior positions including Global Transaction Services & Commercial Bank Head, Risk Management Head, and Head of International Trade Finance. She also served as Corporate Bank Head and Country Risk Manager in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

    Mrs. Hayden-Cater is the President of the Jamaica Bankers Association where she has articulated a mission to encourage transparency within the banking sector, and encourage public trust in the sector, by implementing programmes that increase the financial literacy of the Jamaican people.

    A graduate of the University of the West Indies, Mona, Mrs. Hayden-Cater holds a Master of Science degree in Economics, specializing in Quantitative Economics and Econometrics, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Mathematics.

    Fluent in Spanish, Mrs. Hayden-Cater is married with two daughters, enjoys reading, exercising, community service and is an active and avid member of her church.

    Mr. Epstein is the President of the Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica and is responsible for collaborating with industry players and the Government to expand Jamaica’s outsourcing industry. He has over sixteen years of professional experience in the contact center industry and was recently ranked one of the 50 most influential executives in Nearshore Outsourcing within Latin America and the Caribbean. He also represents the ICT-BPO cluster on several private and public sector committees geared towards enhancing the growth and sustainable development of the ICT/BPO sector. As CEO of Itel-BPO Solutions, he manages several business units across their sites located in Montego Bay, Jamaica and Freeport, Grand Bahama.

    Marlene Street Forrest is the General Manager of the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) and Director of both its subsidiaries. She is committed to developing the JSE Group and particularly the Exchange, in an atmosphere of transparency and fairness while utilizing appropriate technology in providing the greatest possible efficiencies to the market. Mrs. Street Forrest has a wealth of experience having worked in senior management positions at various private and public sector organizations in Jamaica and overseas. It is under her stewardship that the JSE became demutualized and the Caribbean Exchange Network, the US Denominated Market and the Junior Market were launched. She also spearheaded the Registrar Division of the Jamaica Central Depository (JCSD) when she served as General Manager for this subsidiary of the JSE. Mrs. Street Forrest has a B.Sc.     Professor Alvin Wint is Professor of International Business and Special Advisor on External Relations to the Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI). Since his professorial appointment over twenty years ago, he has served the UWI in various capacities, including as a Pro Vice Chancellor. Prof. Wint has produced numerous scholarly publications including four books, has been a consultant to multilateral organizations, and is the recipient of many scholarly and professional awards, including the Vice Chancellor’s Award for All-Round Excellence at UWI. A past student of UWI, and Harvard University, Prof. Wint also served as a tenured Associate Professor in the College of Business at Northeastern University.     Parris E. Jordan is a Managing Director of HVS, where he oversees hospitality consulting and valuation assignments in the Caribbean, the United States, Central America, and Mexico from the HVS office in New York. Prior to assuming the Managing Director role, he was a Vice President with HVS in New York, where he spent almost 7 years and 3 years in Nassau, Bahamas. During his career, Mr. Jordan has performed hundreds of complex hotel consulting and valuation assignments throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America working on various assignments on assets totaling over $20 billion USD in value. More specifically, he has conducted assignments in approximately 25 U.S. states and 25 countries. Mr. Jordan’s areas of expertise include hotel market and feasibility studies, appraisals, valuations, operator searches, target market and global expansion strategy development for prominent international hotel brands, as well as providing expert testimony in litigation and arbitration-related matters. He holds an MS from the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism at New York University (NYU) where he also lectured as an adjunct professor on lodging development from 2007 to 2009.

    Brian Pengelley became the President of the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association in 2011, after serving on the Board of Directors for six years. A Jamaican by birth, he grew up in St Thomas on his family’s farm. He attended DeCarteret College in Mandeville before heading off to school in the United Kingdom to read for his Diploma in veterinary medicine. Mr. Pengelley also lived and worked in North America in the industrial chemical industry for over 25 years before returning to Jamaica in 1996. He joined Red Stripe upon his return and worked in various senior management roles in the company’s Distribution, Sales and Supply Chain functions until June 2014. He is currently the Owner/Director of Penjac Consulting Services specializing in all aspects of commercial and general business management. Penjac also offers consulting services to potential foreign and local investors who may be seeking opportunities in Jamaica.

    Dr. Shane Alexis is the President of the Medical Association of Jamaica and has served in varying capacities as the President of the Jamaica Medical Doctors Association, the Joint Health Sector Group, Medical Association of Jamaica Insurance Fund (MAJIF) and is a member of the University Council (Board of Directors). An experienced medical practitioner, he has served in various capacities in public and private service. A graduate of the Instituto Superior de Ciencas Medicos, Villa Clara, Cuba, Dr. Alexis currently serves as a Medical Officer at the Bustamante Children’s Hospital and the National Drag Racing Circuit Jamaica. He is also a Medical Practitioner at Ruthven Medical Centre, Director at Parkington Medical and Eye Centre, and serves as a medical panelist to a number of organisations. Most recently Dr. Alexis was a member of an Official Jamaica Delegation to the Republic of Cuba led by the Minister of Health in preparing the country for any Ebola outbreak. He is committed to the promotion of good health and wellness in Jamaica and continues to work to achieve the objective of creating a healthy population.

    Eric Crawford is the Chairman of Jamaica International Financial Services Authority (JIFSA). He is also the partner responsible for the delivery of Taxation services in the Jamaica firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). His professional career with PricewaterhouseCoopers includes a tour of duty with the Toronto office, and a one-year secondment as Chief Financial Officer to Jamaica National Investment Company Limited (now Development Bank of Jamaica). Before joining PricewaterhouseCoopers, he served as Chief Internal Auditor for the National Housing Trust. He was a member of the 2005 Government Committee on Tax Policy Reform and the Prime Minister’s Task Force on the Reform of the Education System. He has presented submissions to several Parliamentary Committees including the legislation revamping the regulatory framework for the Financial Sector. Mr. Crawford is a Fellow of the UK Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and is a former Jamaica Representative on that Association’s International Assembly. He is also a Fellow of the ICAJ and was recently bestowed with the Distinguished Member Award of the ICAJ for 2014. Mr. Crawford studied Business Administration at the College of Arts, Science & Technology (now the University of Technology).

    Colin Barnett is the Senior Director for Information Systems and Technical Services with the HEART Trust/National Training Agency, tasked with facilitating labour market research and intelligence (LMRI) to support strategic decision making in directing and ensuring relevance of the education and training system; as well as the integration of information systems to enhance corporate decision making and operational efficiency. His responsibilities include providing accurate and timely research on the national economy, labour force, social demographics, geographical issues, system capacities and programme requirements of the training system. Mr Barnett has had specialised training in areas such as Management & Labour Market Intelligence through the International Labour Organisation in Italy, Strategic Persuasion & Talent Acquisition through the Wharton School in Pennsylvania, and Strategic Leadership, through Cornell University. A past President of the Human Resource Management Association of Jamaica (HRMAJ), Mr. Barnett serves as a member of the HRMAJ Board with special responsibility for Government Relations. He is also a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) as well as the Association for Talent Development (ATD).

    Hon. Julian J. Robinson, MP

    Julian Robinson is the Minister of State in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining. He also serves as the Deputy General Secretary of the People’s National Party. His vision of Jamaica is a developed, knowledge-based, industrialized society driven by appropriate developmental policies, sustained by significant investments in the information and communications technology sector and fuelled by innovation, enterprise and a highly competent labour force. Before entering representational politics, Min. Robinson began his career as a Management and e-Business Consultant in London, where he worked for international firms IBM, a multinational technology and consulting corporation and Scient Corporation, one of the first e-Business systems innovators with headquarters in the United States. He also worked at Jamaica’s trade and investment promotion agency, JAMPRO, where he was instrumental in positioning Jamaica as a major player in the ICT outsourcing industry by attracting several international companies to the island to establish offshore operations. Min. Robinson holds a BSc in Management and Economics from the University of the West Indies, Mona and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the USA.

    Mr. Baghaloo is the Managing Director in PwC Tax and Advisory Services Limited with his primary areas of focus being mergers and acquisitions, crisis management, balance sheet restructuring, business recovery services, creation of business and strategic plans, and project financing. He has over 20 years’ experience in accounting and financial management, negotiations and transaction services, due diligences, corporate finance, restructuring, auditing, liquidations and receiverships, change and crisis management, litigation support and forensic accounting. This includes cross border services performed in the USA, Canada, Haiti, Cayman Islands and Trinidad and Tobago. Mr. Baghaloo has notably spent a significant proportion of his career managing companies in receivership and has participated in excess of 20 major receiverships in various industries and different countries. He is also currently advising on several PPPs projects including hospitality, medical tourism, schools, hospitals, energy and infrastructure. He was appointed a member of the 2002 Tax Reform Committee made recommendations to the Government for overhauling and simplifying the Country’s taxation system. In 2010, he was appointed a Member of the Partnership for Transformation (a joint approach between Government and Private Sector) to make recommendations to simplify the Jamaica’s tax system.
